US-based LED lighting manufacturer NxGen Technologies has developed a LED elevator lamp called the LED 1383. The company claims it gives off a warm, white light and is designed to work continuously for 50,000 hours in contrast to the standard 300-hour lifespan of traditional 1383 incandescent bulbs. NxGen uses a high brightness LED emitter, which dramatically reduces the power consumption compared to the lamp's incandescent counterparts. An incandescent bulb can consume vast amounts of energy because they emit more heat than light, which may be of use on cold winter nights but serves no obvious purpose in an elevator. Due to the fact the lamps use LED technology instead of traditional incandescent filaments, they provide more than 85 per cent energy savings. Furthermore, the lamps contain no glass or mercury and are shock and vibration proof, which makes them much easier to dispose of without damaging the surrounding environment.
